The government has been exploring the use of drones, now a common sight buzzing around buildings across Singapore’s cityscape, inspecting everything from HDB flats to commercial towers. These high-tech flying tools are revolutionising how we maintain and monitor our urban environment, and they’re doing it with speed, precision, and safety in mind.
Why facade inspections matter
Singapore’s tropical weather and dense city environment mean that buildings are exposed to harsh sun, heavy rain, and high humidity all year round. Over time, this wear and tear affects the exterior of buildings, leading to potential safety risks like falling concrete or water seepage.
Under local regulations, building owners with buildings over 13 meters are required to conduct periodic facade inspections (known as Periodic Facade Inspections or PFIs) once their buildings reach 20 years old and every 7 years thereafter. Traditionally, this meant engaging workers to physically check exteriors via suspended scaffolding or rope access, which comes with inherent risks and high costs.
The rise of drone-based facade inspection
Drones are quickly replacing these traditional methods, offering a far safer and more efficient alternative.
